Art of survival taught at Big Basin

Published Sunday July 24

BOULDER CREEK >> About 75 million people visit state parks and wilderness areas in Cali. each year. Yet few seriously consider the possibility of something going wrong.

That’s something the people at Large Basin Redwoods State Park aimed to change by hosting a modern wilderness survival workshop Sunday.

The 2nd of a two-part course on surviving in the wild, Sunday’s class taught park-goers the basics of making fire, signaling for help and purifying water.

The hands-on workshop focused on surviving a 72-hour stay in the wild, which statistically is the most common length of time rescue crews will take to find a lost or injured hiker.

Article length: About 480 words.
